Team Suburban RUSH Reloaded finishes Raid the North Extreme six day expedition race!

Suburban RUSH Reloaded finished Raid the North Extreme with less than 2 hours to spare. Team member, Jordy Ydse, who suffered brutal sickness and a bad infection from a crash was forced to drop out. After recovering somewhat he joined his team at the finish line in Trail, BC.

Team Suburban RUSH set for 6 day expedition race in the Kootenays!

Suburban RUSH Adventure Race (SR) course coordinators Don Barthel, Niki Jacques and Jordy Ydse will team up with David Cleveland to tackle Raid the North Extreme. The race will hub out of Nelson/Kaslo, BC and go non-stop for 6 straight days starting on July 24th at 10AM. The last Extreme race was held in Haida Gwaii back in 2007, where SR race Director, Dean Wutke and his team had a strong finish. Keep an eye on Team Suburban RUSH - Reloaded this year!

Race day has come and gone with so many fun stories to tell. A great team effort by all volunteers, sponsors and racers made the 7th instalment of Suburban RUSH an amazing success. The weather forecast stayed true and no rain fell, on the chilly April day in Port Moody.

Long-time SR friend Fiona Lim sang us Oh Canada and the race started from Suter Brook Village and went into the mountains. Eventually at over 400 meters the racers hit Checkpoint 3 on their bikes and started the descent of great single track trails. This is where skilled mountain bikers could make up some time! CP4 mystery challenge had the racers naming the highest mountains. At CP5 they were on foot again to collect 7 navigation markers in over 4km of forested trails - marker 4 was the toughest behind a tree stump! Back on their bikes they rode to the finish line for one more challenge at Rocky Point Park. First racers came in over a span of 2 ½ hours through the gates. As always there was a tight finish for first, and some hard decisions needed to be made by the referees. Congratulations to all that finished the race!

While the adults were finishing their race the kids were as well. The inaugural Suburban RUSH Kids Race was a smashing success with so many proud parents, kids and cheers from the crowd. I think we found some future Suburban RUSH champions!

Good friends, music, weather plus some friendly competition, between young and old made race day one to remember. Well done everyone!

My sister and Suburban RUSH leadership volunteer Janet Shaw is riding for a great cause on June 18-19. To cure Cancer. She has signed up for the 250km ride from Vancouver to Seattle. Last September we lost our Dad to this terrible disease and I'm proud of my sister for taking on this big endeavour. Help her raise money for BC Cancer Foundation and consider donating here.

Janet has volunteered at every Suburban RUSH since the beginning , this year, for the first time, she will be your fellow racer. Good luck Janet.

Suburban RUSH Kids Race

Hey parents! Ready to create family memories and introduce your kids to a fitness lifestyle? It starts here with Suburban RUSH's Kids Race on Saturday April 30th. Here's how it works:

Categories: Five Age Categories 3-7. Ie. Children age 3 on race day will participate with children the same age.

Teams of two: All kids must race with an adult parent / guardian who will be at the start line prepared to run / walk with your child race partner. Race partners can be Mom, Dad, Grandpa, Granny, Auntie or Uncle

Start Times
• 11:00 am – 7 year olds
• 11:30 am 6 year olds
• Noon – 5 year old
• 12:30 pm – 4 year old
• 1:00 pm - 3 year old

Terrain: Open grass field at Rocky Point Parking

Distance: Depending on the child’s age they will be riding / pushing or walking their bike between 500 meters to 1 km. Tricycles, push bikes and
training wheels welcome

Checkpoints: Kids will participate in an age appropriate checkpoint activity ½ way through such as a bean bag toss. They will get back on their bikes and cross the finish line.

$20 entry fee includes:•

Closed marked course with official start / finish
Checkpoint Pass
Race bibs for both race partners
Official ‘finishers’ ribbon or certificate
Finish line refreshments & snacks including juice boxes and cookies
First aid on site

Limited spots for each age category.
Rain or Shine
There is no child minding onsite.

Suburban RUSH Raids the North!

Two Suburban RUSH Teams, Secondwind and Reloaded placed 6th and 3th (Reloaded) in Raid the North Kelowna Adventure Race this past weekend. It was a tough non stop 36 hour race with some teams running out of water during a long trek through recently burnt forests near Kelowna. There were some other beautiful sections through Myra Canyon and along the water. The race also included a thrilling 75 metre free hanging rappel that we descended at 2am. Congratulations on to all racers and their support teams!

Suburban RUSH has been donating partial proceeds to Eagle Ridge Hospital Foundation in Port Moody for several years. They have a fundraiser of their own they thought our race supporters might be interested in.

Wheel to Heal Ride presented by Cap's Westwood Cycle, benefiting the Eagle Ridge Hospital Foundation is on Sunday, August 23, 2009. The inaugural Tri-Cities Wheel to Heal Ride is a fun bike ride where you choose your challenge while making a personal commitment to Eagle Ridge Hospital. There are 10 km, 40 km and 80 km bike route options.

Suburban RUSH finish a strong 6th at Full Moon

The 36 hour Full Moon in June Adventure Race on June 6-7 had 31 teams race near the Panorama Mountain Village area close to Invermere, BC. Team Suburban RUSH finished well considering 15 teams DNFed and despite Jordy spraining his ankle after the first checkpoint. Don Barthel said they hit the navigation real well, which is key to the majority of adventure races. Team consisted of Kyla Adams, and Suburban RUSH AR leadership volunteers: Don Barthel, Jordy Ydse and Magnus Byne. For results click here . Next race Raid the North 36 hour Kelowna!

Ladies and Gentlemen do the MOMAR!

On May 23rd, teams the Ladies and Gentlemen of Suburban RUSH both took part in the MOMAR Adventure Race in Squamish. The race took us to the top of the Chief where we repelled off. We came in 2nd and 3rd place for teams of four. Great day and party as always with MOMAR!

The next race is this weekend as Team Suburban RUSH heads for Alberta to compete in the 36 hour Full Moon in June Adventure Race. Good luck team!

Everyone has a story

Every racer has a goal. Some racers set out to land on the podium. Almost all would agree just having fun on the trails is the best reward. And still for others, they strive to simply finish the race.

For a week leading to the race, 'clouds with showers' hung over the race day forecast. But lucky for all, the showers never fell and it was a perfect day for racing in Port Moody. Newport Village buzzed with anticipation for the start of the 5th annual race. Over 200 racers made it to the start line ready to tackle 30 km of off-road trails. Our national anthem alumni singer, Feona Lim brought her daughter to join in the act in singing Oh Canada before another crowd of spectators and racers. Three, two, one and they are off.....

The climb spread out the racers as they headed for CP3 near the highpoint of 483 metres into the mountains and above beautiful Buntzen Lake. A thrilling single-track descent was followed by the four km navigation challenge which had racers running in every direction finding markers in the forested lakeside trails.

From almost the start there was a good fight for first overall between; Glen Iverson, last year's yellow jersey solo male winner, Charles Fortier (Five year veteran of SR); Stefan Muller, and Dustan Sept of Norco. Stefan crossed the finish line first overall with a time of 2:11:41, with Fortier seconds behind.

Then there were teams like the Cactus Kids taking a more relaxed pace pictured here taking some time to enjoy the fantastic mountain views from high up on checkpoint 3.

Lastly, there was Amy. Her story started when her race partner withdrew and she was faced with racing solo. No. 66 was focused on finishing her first adventure race. Unstoppable, Amy persevered for 6 hours and 19 minutes to the finish line at Pioneer Park where she was greeted by her husband. Amy said she had a great time.

Adventure racing is not supposed to be a walk in the park, we attempt to put a course together that is both a challenge and at the same time gets you home for dinner (or to the pub in time for a pint).
